Dear Parents of Students in Grade 7:

This year your daughter or son in grade 7 may prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. In the Diocese of Peterborough, the program to prepare for the reception of the sacraments is a parish-based sacramental preparation program.

The sacramental preparation program for Confirmation is called Chosen: Your Journey toward Confirmation. The goal of the program is to offer your child an invitation to deepen her/his faith, to experience a Church that desires that s/he prepares well to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is our hope that Chosen will not only offer your child a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Catholic Faith, but will also anoint their heart at this critical time in their lives. The program will be further enhanced with a Mass Journal of reflections, an Apostolic Service Project, a day of Prayer and Retreat, and a Confirmation Saint Project.

To learn more about the program and your role in preparing your child for Confirmation, we invite you to attend an Information Night for Parents, Sponsor (if possible) and Candidates, to be held at the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains on, Thursday, September 7th, 2017 at 7:00 pm.  During the sacramental reparation program, there will be parent sessions focusing on each of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Sponsors are welcome to attend those sessions as well. Finally, we invite you to watch a welcome video to parents from Chosen’s author, Chris Stefanick, which is available at

Thank you for your support and commitment at this important stage of your child’s spiritual development. We look forward to seeing you at the Parent Information Session.

A note about the Sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation:
For the sacrament of Confirmation, a sponsor is necessary. The selection of your child’s sponsor is a very important decision and you and your child should discuss together who should take on this role. The sponsor must be a practicing Catholic, over the age of sixteen, who has already been confirmed. One sponsor (may be a man or a woman) is chosen for Confirmation and can be, but does not have to be, one of your child’s godparents. The sponsor should be someone that your child respects and whose responsibility it will be to support the parents and child as you prepare for your child’s full initiation into the Church. The sponsor cannot be the child’s mother or father and does not have to be a relative.
Sponsor Requirements (Taken from the 1983 Code of Canon Law):
• Is at least 16 years of age;
• Is a practicing Catholic;
• Has received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation;
o Sponsor is required to provide a Copy of sponsor’s annotated Baptism certificate (including Confirmation Date – this may be obtained from the Parish where one was baptized)
• Leads a life of witness that is in harmony with the Roman Catholic faith and practice;
• Attends the parent sessions (where possible);
• Is not a parent of the candidate; and
• Completes and submits a Personal Attestation Form to the pastor.

I want to assure you of my prayers and desire to serve best the needs of you as parents and the hope you have for your children to receive the grace of the sacraments

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Luis Lapinid
